Mostly Autonomous, Entirely Human: The Future of the Underwriter

Andriy @ Oyyo · Mar 25, 2026

There's a narrative in insurtech that AI will replace underwriters. We think that's wrong — and building for it is a mistake.

The best underwriters aren't data-entry clerks. They're risk evaluators, relationship builders, and judgment makers. The problem is that today, they spend 70% of their time on the first job (data entry) and 30% on the work that actually matters.

The 2035 Underwriter

Imagine an underwriter in 2035. A broker emails a submission at 9 AM. By 9:01 AM:

  • The AI has extracted every field from every document
  • Clearance rules have been checked automatically
  • Missing documents have been flagged and a request sent to the broker
  • A preliminary quote has been generated based on historical data
  • The submission appears on the underwriter's Today Board, prioritized by urgency

The underwriter reviews the AI's work in 3 minutes — confirming the extraction, adjusting the quote based on their relationship with the broker and their knowledge of the market, and approving the final number. By 9:15 AM, the broker has a quote.

That's not science fiction. That's what Palomar Specialty does today with Oyyo.

Why "Entirely Human" Matters

Every AI decision in Oyyo is visible, auditable, and overridable. The Journal captures the complete chain of custody — every extraction, every confidence score, every human correction.

This isn't just good UX. It's a compliance requirement. Insurance regulators need to understand how decisions were made. "The AI did it" isn't an acceptable answer. "The AI extracted the data at 94% confidence, the underwriter reviewed and approved the quote" — that's an audit trail.

The Oyyo Approach

We call it "Mostly Autonomous, Entirely Human" because:

  • Mostly Autonomous: AI handles the repetitive, error-prone work that burns out underwriters
  • Entirely Human: Every critical decision — risk evaluation, pricing judgment, binding authority — stays with experienced humans

The AI is the engine. The underwriter is the driver. And together, they're 10x faster than either alone.
